Curriculum Development - Assessments

Educational assessment is the process of finding out and providing evidence or documentation of the levels of knowledge or proficiency students reach in subject areas, the degree of skills mastery students achieve related to numeracy, literacy, or performance (such as in athletics, music, theatre, art, or career technical fields), or even the characteristics of attitudes and beliefs across a wide spectrum of human behavior. Assessment can focus on an individual learner, a learning community (class, workshop, or other organized group of learners), an institution, or even an entire educational system as a whole.

Assessment is often equated or confused with evaluation, but the two concepts are different. Assessment is used to determine what a student knows or is able to do, while evaluation determines the worth or value of a course or program. Assessment data often affects student advancement, placement, and grades, as well as teachers’ decisions about which instructional strategies to use, which curriculum to choose, and whether to re-teach. Evaluations often utilize assessment data along with other resources to make decisions about revising, adopting, or rejecting a course or program.
