Language Instruction and Student Engagement - Technology’s Role in Language Instruction

One way of engaging students in using their listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills as they acquire Mandarin is through the use of technology. Language labs have merged with computer labs to provide students opportunities for intensive and individualized practice. A number of tools may be used in the language classroom for demonstrating learning and evaluating student progress, as well as extending language learning opportunities beyond the classroom.

So-called Web 2.0 tools can further enhance cultural exchange while learners are developing toward communicative proficiency by connecting with students all over the world.

Teachers may also take advantage of a range of programs and resources as an avenue to professional development.

Note that the use of a number of these tools may require dedicated server space for storing digital student work and multimedia files of assignments and assessments. Close relationships between teachers, site Information Technology (IT) staff, and administration are key to the success of using technology optimally for language teaching and learning.
