As reflected in the California framework and content standards for world languages, the goal is for students to develop linguistic and cultural literacy, including academic knowledge, in world languages and cultures. Development in a second or foreign language means the ability to communicate in culturally appropriate ways in a variety of settings which helps prepare students for diverse cultural environments, to compete in the workplace, and in personal pursuits. The overall goal is for students to develop language learning as a lifelong endeavor.
